Dr. Cony Martinez
Founder and Director, Cinema Culturas
Dr. Martínez earned her PhD from the University of California, Irvine in Latin American Literature and has been a professor at Claremont McKenna College, Pomona College, and UCLA. As part of her commitment to film-related projects, Dr. Martínez was a board member of the Riverside International Film Festival as well as the Festival’s Director of Programming. She has collaborated extensively with the Mexican Consulates in Los Angeles and San Bernardino, and the Mexican Institute of Cinematography, to bring award-winning films from Mexico and other Latin American countries to the United States.
Having taught many courses in literature and film as well as in Latin American culture and civilization, Dr. Martinez is the recipient of numerous teaching awards. Recently, she taught a course in Mexican film at UCLA with the Mexican Consul of Cultural Affairs, Dr. Alejandro Pelayo. She is also the recipient of the Kravis Leadership Institute Social Sector Research Fellowship for her research with women’s breast cancer in her home state of Sonora, Mexico.
Dr. Martinez is the founder and director of Cinema Culturas Film Fest Inland Empire and Dialogos Americas. She is a member of three committees—Economy, Immigration, and Film & Culture—under the initiative “Mexico Innova” at the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles.
